Specialists
Justin Uhl DVM, MS, DACVS-SA
Dr. Uhl graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from UC Davis in 2002. He went on to complete a Master’s Degree in comparative pathology with an emphasis on bone biomechanics in 2008 and completed his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 2010.
After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Uhl pursued a rotating internship followed by a surgery residency at the University of Minnesota. During his residency, he served for two years as Chief Resident and sat on the Medical Review Board at the hospital. He finished his residency in July 2014 and worked in private practice in Sacramento before Summit Veterinary Surgery Service in April of 2018. Dr. Uhl is trained in orthopedic, neurologic, soft tissue, and minimally invasive procedures and has a special interest in surgical oncology.
Dr. Uhl enjoys spending time with his 2 daughters and his grandson. Dr. Uhl has his private pilot’s license and participates in triathlons in his free time.
Shannon Kerrigan, VMD, DACVS-SA
Dr. Kerrigan is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where she obtained her Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris. She completed a small animal medical and surgical internship at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to the west coast to complete a residency in small animal surgery at the University of California at Davis. She is trained in orthopedic, neurologic, soft tissue, and minimally invasive procedures. She has a special interest in surgical oncology and wound repair and has conducted research in the field of bone biomechanics. She is board certified, becoming a a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgery in 2018. She spent 5 years at Vista Veterinary Specialists prior to joining our team at Summit Veterinary Surgery.
Tom Yarbrough, DVM, DACVS
Dr. Tom Yarbrough is a 1990 graduate of LSU. After graduation and a one-year internship in Southern California, he completed his surgical residency at the University of California Davis and his PhD work at the UC Med Center in Sacramento. While completing his research, he developed and extensive mobile surgical referral practice covering Northern and Southern California, Kentucky, Florida, and Washington. For 12 years he held the Chief surgeon position and a referral practice in Dubai splitting his time 50/50 between the Emirates and the US. He has continued to mix the excitement of private practice with the intellectual challenges of drug and devise development, being involved with the research in the Easops and Zeus laparoscopic robots, assisting in the development of a robotic standing CT system, Founding Tesio pharmaceutics developing small molecule therapeutics for osteoarthritis and pulmonary inflammation and assisting PetVivo holdings with research into hydrogel therapeutics for joint disease. He is excited to join Dr. Uhl’s group and sees this as an exciting new phase of his career.
Daniel Ben-Aderet, DVM, DACVAA
Dr. Ben-Aderet grew up in rural San Diego county in a veterinary household. His parents owned and operated a small animal general practice hospital for over 30 years and introduced him to his love of veterinary medicine.
After graduating with a bachelors degree from UCLA in 2012 he attended UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, obtaining his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2018. After a year in general practice followed by an additional year of training focusing on specialty and emergency medicine he developed a passion for, and commitment to enhanced peri-operative medicine and pain management. In light of this development, a residency in anesthesia and analgesia was a natural next step. After completion of a 3 year residency in anesthesia and analgesia at UC Davis he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. His professional interested include cardio-thoracic anesthesia, orthopedic case management and local/regional analgesia (ultrasound and nerve stimulation guided peripheral nerve blocks).
Outside of his clinical and teaching duties at UC Davis Dr. Ben-Aderet is working to bring specialty anesthesia and analgesia care to practices all over California.
He is excited to team with Summit Veterinary Surgical Services to provide enhanced peri-operative anesthetic and pain management services.
When not overseeing cases in the operating room Dr. Ben-Aderet enjoys exploring both the mountains and restaurants of northern California and and is an avid tennis player and downhill skier.
Support Staff
Wendy Bosson, RVT
Wendy Bosson, RVT, started in veterinary medicine in 2004 as a veterinary assistant. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Poultry Medicine at UC Davis in 2009. Wendy received her RVT license in 2015 and has worked in multiple specialty hospitals and found that she enjoys the surgery department. In 2019, Wendy joined Summit Veterinarian Services. Wendy is currently working towards gaining her veterinary technician specialty license in surgery. Wendy hopes to continue to grow as a technician while providing support and guidance for other technicians.
Wendy enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, cooking, and crafting in her free time.
Kiran Mahal, Veterinary Assistant
Kiran Mahal, a Northern California native, began her journey in veterinary medicine after earning a Bachelor of Science from CSU Chico in 2017. She continued to complete a veterinary technician program and worked in general practice prior to joining the Summit team in July 2023 as a veterinary assistant. Currently, she is working towards her registered veterinary technician license.
Outside of work, Kiran enjoys spending time with friends and family. She also loves exploring the outdoors with her dogs.
Laura Dupzyk, RVT
Laura Dupzyk, RVT grew up in Sacramento and has spent most of her life around animals, which led her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
In 2018, Laura began working at a general practice while also obtaining her Associates of Science in Veterinary Technology. Laura received her RVT license in 2020 and began working at Summit Veterinary Surgery.
Laura has also worked in a large multi-specialty referral center alongside other specialists, but her interests have always been in surgery, especially with the Summit team. In her free time, Laura enjoys the outdoors, and spending time with her husband, Son, and dogs Scout and Pete.
Thea Miller, Veterinary Assistant
Thea Miller was raised in Santa Cruz, California, where she gained experience working at a family-run veterinary practice throughout high school. She graduated from UC Davis in June of 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, specializing in Animal Behavior. Her passion for surgery led her to join the Summit Veterinary team in 2023. Thea aspires to attend veterinary school, where she plans to continue her advocacy for animal welfare. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with loved ones, cooking, and being outside.
Dylan Caro, Veterinary Assistant
Dylan is a current veterinary student at UC Davis. He completed his bachelors degree in Biology at UC Santa Cruz and has worked in veterinary medicine since 2018, working in general practice, emergency and specialty medicine.
He is thrilled to help the people and pets of the greater Sacramento area, while expanding his knowledge of veterinary surgery. In his free time he enjoys going for bike rides and spending time with his family and chihuahua.
Justine Mease, RVT
Justine has dedicated over a decade to the veterinary field, driven by a passion for animal care and a commitment to learning. She began her journey at Cosumnes River College, where she earned an Associate of Arts in Veterinary Technology in 2015. After becoming a registered veterinary technician in 2017, Justine built a diverse career spanning general practice, shelter medicine, and emergency care.
Currently, Justine is expanding her expertise at Summit, where she finds joy in exploring various surgical techniques and innovative approaches to veterinary medicine. Outside of her professional life, Justine is a devoted mother to her son, Elijah, and a loving owner to her German shepherd, Makana. Her free time is often spent fishing at lakes or exploring coastal cities and beaches, where she finds inspiration and relaxation amidst nature’s beauty.
Maribel Gutierrez, Practice Manager
Maribel was born and raised in San Diego, CA. Her passion for animals lead her to study Animal Science at UC Davis where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in 2016. Over the years, she’s had the privilege of working in both emergency and general practice, gaining valuable experience in a wide range of cases. Maribel joined Summit November of 2021 to expand her knowledge in surgery. Recently, Maribel has stepped into a management role, where she is excited to combine her hands-on veterinary knowledge with leadership to support her team and provide exceptional care for all patients.
Maribel loves spending time with her husband, two dogs, and cat. She also enjoys working out and skiing with friends during the winter.
